About

Our Intro to Longsword class is available to students interested in getting started with longsword in HEMA. Students wishing to join the regular longsword class must complete the intro program.

What you'll learn:

  • Basics of the historical context of fencing in the 1300-1500s.
  • Historical German longsword cutting and guard techniques used in unarmored combat.
  • Footwork, timing, and distance management for historical fencing.

Class Schedule

Time: 6:30 - 8 pm
  • June 1 - Class One: Basic cuts and parries, the four openings, and guards.
  • June 8 - Class Two: Footwork, distance management, master cuts
  • June 15 - Class Three: Timing, grips, master cuts
  • June 22 - Class Four: Master cuts, thrusts, and point control
  • June 29 - Class Five: Binding

Requirements


Adults are free to participate without restriction. Teens 16 and older may participate with parental consent. Parents and guardians of minors must sign the HEMA Alliance Liability Waiver in-person at their student's first practice.

Wear weather-appropriate clothing and bring a bottle of water. If applicable, wear an athletic cup if you know you will be sparring. All other necessary safety and practice gear for synthetic weapons sparring is provided by the club if needed.

​Feel free to bring your own equipment. All gear owned and brought in by members is subject to safety inspection before being used for drilling and sparring. Wooden and Cold Steel training swords are not suitable for anything outside of solo practice. Please do not bring any sharp weaponry to our public practices.

All students are required to fill out our waiver, code of conduct, social media policy, and emergency contact form.

Other Info

Make-up classes will be scheduled in the event of cancellations for weather. Cancellations will be announced on our Facebook page.
