About the German Longsword Class

The intent of the longsword class is to explore general German longsword. Taking source from Jude Lew(1448), Peter von Danzig(1452), Jorg Wilhalm(1522-23), Joachim Meyer(1570), and others from the Liechtenauer tradition, the class teaches longsword within the medieval dueling context as well as the renaissance tournament(Fechtschule) context.

About the Medieval Sword and Buckler Class

The intent of the Medieval sword and buckler class is to explore medieval combat with the class medieval arming sword. This class primarily studies from the oldest European fencing manual; Manuscript I.33. Other manuscripts such as the Andre Lignitzer plays and Talhoffer's manuscripts are studied to compare other sword and buckler techniques. Finally, the class explores the basic use of  the arming sword without the buckler by studying the messer manual of Hans Lechuchner.

About Fight Fridays

Fight Friday is a day dedicated to having fun and improving students' weapon skills. This free form class day allows for students to try new weapons, get extra sparring in for the week, and to get instruction to improve on techniques for tournaments or for fighting in general. This class' loose structure is intended to be fluid to allow for whatever students want to learn!

About Study Groups

VBHF recognizes that not everyone is passionate about longswords or sword and buckler systems. Because of this, VBHF offers and encourages study groups run by students to explore the weapons that interest them! These study groups allow for a unique way to learn how to build curriculums, teach classes, and generating interest in your favorite weapon!

Study groups are considered unofficial classes that students and officers may teach when they are available at practice. Because these classes are only available when permitted, they are not on the official schedule of the club. If a particular study group interests you, please reach out so we can verify that it will be available.

For more information about starting a study group at VBHF, talk to an officer about how you can start teaching what you want!

Current Active Study Groups:
